In the fall of 2015, the second year students in my program became involved with the Nova Scotia Barristers’ Society and their Talk Justice outreach program. Through them, we were told about the issue of land title in the Dartmouth community of North Preston, where families have been living in homes and on land for, in some cases centuries, had no legal title to their land. This inspired a five month long investigative journalistic project in an effort not only to find the documentation of these past wrongs of government, but to possibly, change it.
‘Untitled: The Legacy of Land in North Preston’ launched in February of 2016 and has since been picked up by various news outlets both local and national.
For this project, I served as one of three producers. In this role, I was in charge of assigning readings, research, interviews, fact checking, and other jobs to my group of eight. I was also able to film some of the interviews. For example, I filmed all of the footage in the following video:
I also edited one of the five videos for the project. It focused on the current initiatives that community members have undertaken in an effort to make real change happen for their family and friends.
